  • Davina Smith-Candidate Davina Smith

    Davina Smith

    I’m running for Utah State House to unite rural voices in District #69 and to move southeastern Utah towards a thriving future. I will fight hard to create opportunities that allow families to prosper in rural Utah for generations. This includes investing in our schools, affordable housing, working families, and the health of our environment – and above all ensuring that every Utahn’s voice is heard in our government.

    My Platform is built around five main issues:

    1. Voting Rights;

    2. Housing Justice;

    3. Environmental Justice;

    4. Economic Justice;

    5. Education for All.

  • About Davina

    I am running again for Utah House of Representatives in District #69 in 2024 to stand up for our rural and indigenous communities.

    I’m originally from Monument Valley, Utah and am an enrolled member of the Diné (Navajo) tribe. I belong to the Ta'chii' nii (Red Running into the Water) clan and am born to the Ta' baa ha' (Edgewater) clan. This land in District #69 has been sacred to me and my community for generations, and I intend to protect it.

    My Grandfather worked in the uranium mines. I have memories of my grandmother washing the toxic yellow dust out of his clothes in the kitchen while she was cooking dinner. I grew up with chronic headaches, but never understood why. Our family and neighbors began to learn about the harmful impacts of extractive industries on our health and the environment. It turned out that our well water was contaminated and that exposure to radiation caused my headaches. My Grandmother started to speak up about land protection, told our community's story, and showed me the power of using my voice.

    I grew up attending a Native American Boarding School in Arizona, where we were yelled at for not speaking English and looked down upon for being Indigenous. I sent my 4 children to schools in Salt Lake City that had more resources and opportunities for them. They still faced discrimination in the school system, which was when I had no choice but to speak up. My motherly love ignited my passion to use my voice to protect my kids and advocate for equitable education. Just like my grandmother, I learned that my voice could have power and that I have a responsibility to use it.

    I have the perspective and experience to help southeast Utah thrive and evolve. I know that I need to bring my voice to the State Capitol. The time is now!
